Singer, songwriter, visual artist, poet and once upon a time great lesbian rock icon Patti Smith discusses marrying her poetry with music and shares what people can learn from her relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe, which she writes about in her critically acclaimed new memoir about her early days in New York City, titled Just Kids.

Patti Smith is often called the godmother of punk, and Rolling Stone included her on its list of "100 Greatest Artists of All Time." A lover of early and obscure rock and roll, Smith's music was a hybrid of rock and poetry, and her Horses album has been hailed as one of the top 100 albums of all time. She's also performed in plays and poetry readings, written for rock magazines and published two volumes of poems. The Grammy-nominated artist is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and recently released her first book of prose, the memoir Just Kids.

Another interesting Patti fact:
Canadian actress Ellen Page frequently mentions Smith as one of her idols and has done various photo shoots replicating famous Smith photos. She has said that the only time she's been truly star-struck was when she met Smith backstage at a concert in Europe and she has a dog named Patti in homage to Smith.[45] Because of Page's suggestions, Smith's work and name also factor prominently in two of Page's movies, Juno and The Tracey Fragments.

The lyrics to one of the lesbian anthems of the eighties: Dancing Barefoot (SHE)

she is benediction
she is addicted to thee
she is the root connection
she is connecting with he

here I go and I don't know why
I flow so ceaselessly
could it be he's taken over me...

I'm dancing barefoot
heading for a spin
some strange music draws me in
makes me come on like some heroin/e

she is sublimation
she is the essence of thee
she is concentrating on
he, the chosen of she

here I go and I don't know why
I spin so ceaselessly,
could it be he's taken over me...

[chorus]

>she is re-creation
she, intoxicated by thee
she has the slow sensation that
he is levitating with she ...

here I go and I don't know why,
I spin so ceaselessly,
'til I lose my sense of gravity...

[chorus]

(oh god I fell for you ...)

the plot of our life sweats in the dark like a face
the mystery of childbirth, of childhood itself
grave visitations
what is it that calls to us?
why must we pray screaming?
why must not death be redefined?
we shut our eyes we stretch out our arms
and whirl on a pane of glass
an afixiation a fix on anything the line of life the limb of a tree
the hands of he and the promise that s/he is blessed among women.
